About Bahrain

The Kingdom of Bahrain, which means, the Kingdom of two seas, is an island country, in the Persian Gulf. Saudi Arabia lies to the west and is connected to Bahrain by King Faud Causeway. The official religion of Bahrain is Islam and the official language is Arabic. Bahrain is generally a more liberal country than its neighbours. Churches, Hindu Temples, Sikh Gurdwara can be seen alongside of the Mosques. Bahrain is a popular tourist destination for most of the people of neighbouring Gulf Countries and other parts of the world too, with over eight million tourists a year.  Bahrain has International F1 Circuit. It also has many castles like Qalat Al Bahrain which has been listed by UNESCO as a world heritage site. About Nagarathars

Nagarathar business people are Hindus, predominantly originating in the Chettinad region of Tamil Nadu,South India. They have been trading with Southeast Asia since the heyday of the Chola empire.Nagarathars, also known as Nattukkottai Chettiars, were an important trading class of 19th and 20th century South East Asia and spread to Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Malayasia, Singapore.Nagarathars are known for their philanthropy; building temples, and schools and maintaining them throughout Asia.Futher details click here .

About Bahrain Nagarathars

This is a group of Nagarathar families living in the Kingdom of Bahrain. There were Nagarathars in Bahrain even before thirty years. But they were not brought under one roof, until in 2001, a small group of nagarathar families joined together to celebrate the ‘Pillaiyar Nonbu’ in our traditional way. From then on, the number of families attending the Pillaiyar Nonbu increased year after year. Presently about 30 families and 15 bachelors are in this group.

This group is involved

  • In arranging get together of nagarathar families, to ensure that they keep in   touch with each other and our native.
  • Celebrating the nagarathars festivals together like Pongal, Pillayar Nonbu, Deepavalli etc.
  • Helping the newly arrived nagarathars to get aquatinted with the new environment.
  • Sharing information about job opportunities, investments, properties, marriage alliances etc.
  • Presently involved into setting up a ‘charity wing’ to help our community people who are in need back home.
  • This charity wing would lend a helping hand for the economically poor families for the marriages of their girls, education of their children, medical expenses and kovil thirupanis.
  • Create a platform for the nagarathars living in Bahrain to share their thoughts and views.
  • To teach all the nagarathar children  here, about our tradition and our mother tongue Tamil too.
